Spinless-Tyler

Last weekend I had a babysitter one evening and she watched "Hitch" after the kids went to bed. Tyler apparently helped her get the TV/sound/DVD all going together and so he knew what she was going to be watching. The next day, he asked me about the movie and said he wanted to watch it. (It's a fabulously funny movie, by the way, if you haven't seen it. Will Smith is in great form and Kevin James plays a wonderful role.) I told him it was a grown-up movie so when he got older he could watch it. I think it is very clean, but then I wasn't watching it with kids in mind so I really couldn't say, but generally, I was thinking it probably wouldn't be of much interest because most of it would be over his head. Anyway, he informed me (apparently as supportive argument of why he should watch it) that he has seen that actor on TV, "real TV", he informed me, "not a video." I'm guessing he's watched Fresh Prince of Bel Air with Jim. They get their non-PBS television over there, so I figure there's a balance. But back to our conversation, I said even so, since it was a grown-up film it wouldn't interest him. "Actually," he corrected me, "there's something about the grown-up movies that makes them MORE interesting to me."

I love how he states things just as he interprets them, without spin. There's something about the unexpectedness of an often mature, well-thought-out observation coming from such a young person.

The kids would like what happens to him after eating the fish.
Great film! Kids have a way of just telling it like it is don't they.

Sara, Amanda is my friend in Saginaw and must have followed a link from somewhere to your blog? Not sure where since she is telling about Kara V who is also our friend, but you know when people start commenting on your blog, I believe etiquette calls for you to comment back. Someday I'll get you to be a regular commentator!

Here's what you said...

"I love how he states things just as he interprets them, without spin. "

What I think is just so funny about that, is, well, (hee-hee), I think he gets that from his mom. (bwahahahaha! ok, now i'm just laughing all over the place). Sorry, yes, so sorry.

I too love kids interpretations and rationalizations (aren't those big words for me? did i spell them correctly?). I usually just end up giving my boys that blank stare, nod, smile, and on I go. They smile back all proud, and laugh at me. It starts young.
