Recent Tyler

Tyler began 1st grade and is adjusting to the full day schedule. He thinks 7 hours is too long to be at school. He said it takes away too much time from being at home with me and wants me to homeschool him. When I suggested he might miss being with his friends, his solution was that I could drive him over to school three times a day for recesses! Despite the long days, he is doing well - working diligently when at school. I've been seeking to encourage him when he works at something because he has had a tendency to dismiss anything he can't do perfectly. This summer his goal was to make it all the way across the monkey bars, which he couldn't do at the start of the summer but now he can! And I tell him I'm so proud that he kept working at it in order to do that.

Cute story:

(Background - driving home one night, I had to swerve to the shoulder to avoid being hit by a truck that was not navigating very well. My friend riding along commented it was a little early for alcohol to be a factor, but watching the vehicle, that was the most likely conclusion. The kids were curious about that so I explained that when someone drinks too much of an alcoholic or "adult" beverage, their senses are compromised and that makes it not safe to drive.)
Now to the story . . . we had movie night Friday night (I rented Annie to show the kids some classic 80's musical culture) and I told the kids they could each have a can of the organic gingerale (similar to soda but lots less fizz and sugar) with our movie and popcorn. Tyler, very excited, exclaimed, "Maybe I'll drink the whole thing and get drunk!" to which I laughed, but he continued on, "then we can go in the car and I'll tell you how to drive and you'll drive drunk!" I laugh every time I think of it.
He was adamant that he could get drunk from his soda, I guess he thinks it is an adult beverage because he rarely has it but sees grown-ups drinking it!
